When a Reddit user shared their experience in a post on r/RealEstate, it quickly drew attention from thousands of homeowners.
The post, titled “Manipulative Buyers Got Greedy and Lost a Great House,” detailed how a potential sale went off the rails thanks to overreaching repair demands and questionable tactics. “I’m all about negotiating,” the seller wrote, “but when someone tries to manipulate negotiations to get more money out of the other party, that is bad business.”

‘We just wanted to sell the house’
The seller used the same agent they had worked with to buy the home. But while she was a great buyer’s agent, she didn’t measure up on the selling side. “She did zero negotiating with the buyers’ agent, even tried talking us into the buyers’ terms on their first offer,” the Redditor wrote.
The home was listed at the low end of its appraised value to reflect the slower fall market. It got attention quickly, including a second showing from a couple who brought both sets of their parents.
“All 4 parents were at the second showing, and all 4 were at the inspections, apparently following the home inspector around, questioning a lot of things,” the seller said. “The inspection report even included pics of ‘findings’ that had one of the parents in the pics.”
The seller agreed to a contract with minor concessions but was caught off guard by an inspection addendum that included up to $2,000 in septic and well repairs, which hadn’t been discussed. Despite this, they signed, thinking the house, which was in great shape, would pass smoothly.

$40,000 in repair requests
A few days after the inspection, the seller’s Ring camera showed a truck pulling into the driveway. “Three guys get out and put a ladder on my roof and start climbing,” the post read. No appointment had been made. The seller called their agent, who was unaware of the visit.
