Gulf Coast Freeze: School closings, schedule changes

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — We’re tracking how freezing weather could impact Gulf Coast schools. This is your one-stop destination for possible school closures and schedule changes affecting our coverage area. (Check back for updates!)

Baldwin County Public Schools

Baldwin County Public Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler said he hasn’t decided about school closures for the week of Jan. 20, aside from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., observance already scheduled.

But he did give some guidance.

“For your family’s planning purposes, know that IF there is snow or freezing rain predicted overnight any day next week, then it is likely we will close schools,” Tyler said in his latest post on the school system’s webpage. “Icy roads and bridges in the early morning hours are very dangerous to our bus operations.

“Remember, students are out of school this Monday, January 20th, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday,” Tyler said. “I will be back in touch with you about any weather impacts on Monday or sooner if necessary.

“Please pay attention to your email, text and social media. Also, remember not to rely on rumors. If we close, you will hear directly from me through our standard channels.”

Chickasaw City Schools

Chickasaw City Schools has shared no final decisions about school schedules ahead of winter weather.

“We are closely monitoring the weather conditions for early next week in collaboration with local weather agencies and emergency management officials,” the school posted on Facebook. “Our students’ and staff’s safety and well-being are always our top priorities.

“Any decisions on school closures will be communicated to you via SchoolStatus, Facebook, our website, and local news stations.”

Cottage Hill Christian Academy

Cottage Hill Christian Academy students will not have classes on Tuesday, News 5 has learned.

“We have been monitoring the weather forecast carefully over the past few days and this afternoon,” a Saturday email from the school said. “After careful consideration, due to the predicted weather conditions that included extreme wind chill temperatures and the possibility of a wintery mix, we have made the decision to cancel school and close the Early Education Center on Tuesday, January 21.”

CHCA’s email said the school has not decided on Wednesday’s schedule.

“We will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates regarding Wednesday, January 22 as soon as possible,” the email said.

Mobile County Public Schools

Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Chresal D. Threadgill said there’s a “strong possibility” that MCPSS campuses will be closed Tuesday, but no final decision has been made.

Parents can expect that decision to come late Sunday evening or Monday morning, she said.

“Additionally, all extracurricular activities and games are canceled for those days.”

Santa Rosa County District Schools

Santa Rosa County District Schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 20, for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 21, according to officials.

“Santa Rosa County School District is closely monitoring the forecasted cold weather potentially arriving to our area early next week,” SRCDS said in an email Friday. “We are working closely with the National Weather Service of Mobile and Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations to ensure the safety of all students and staff as we make decisions about school schedules.”

So far, school appears to be open on Tuesday, according to the latest SRCDS update.

“As a reminder, Monday, January 20 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” an SRCDS Facebook post said on Saturday. “There is no school for students. All school campuses and district offices will be closed. Students and staff will return on Tuesday, January 21.”

St. Paul’s Episcopal School

St. Paul’s Episcopal School will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 21, according to the school’s latest Facebook post.

“With temperatures expected to plunge well below freezing and significant snow accumulation possible, school will be closed on Tuesday, January 21,” the post said.

It included a message to parents and its Facebook followers: “We are closely monitoring the forecast and will provide updates regarding Wednesday as soon as possible,” the post said.
