HG Construction to build 37-storey Manchester tower

HG Construction has been picked to build a 37-storey student accommodation scheme in Manchester.

The Hertfordshire-based contractor will deliver 1,014 student rooms across One Medlock Street, a new student scheme set to be delivered in Deansgate, south of Manchester’s city centre.

The scheme is being developed by Greystar, while HG Construction will deliver piling and concrete frame on the project internally. The value of the scheme is unknown. It is due to complete in 2028.

The new building will have a 37-storey tower and an 11-storey tower. A Premier Inn currently on the site will be demolished.

The scheme will have 13,000 square feet of amenity space on the ground, first, 11th and 37th floor. This will include a gym, yoga studio, study areas, meeting spaces, screening rooms, shared lounges and games rooms.

The scheme’s sustainability features include a green living roof, solar panels and “sustainable materials”, said HG Construction.

It will also include an 11-storey public art installation across 30 pre-cast panels on the building’s facade.

The new building will be an 11-minute walk from Manchester Metropolitan University and a 20-minute walk from the main and north campuses of the University of Manchester.

HG Construction chief executive Adam Quinn said: “This is an exciting scheme which will make a significant contribution to the transformation of this area and help to meet the high and growing demand for first-class student accommodation in the Manchester area.”

The scheme was approved by Manchester City Council in June 2023. The planning application was brought by Premier Inn-owner Whitbread and student housing developer Dominus.
