JRL has submitted plans for a new residential block in Manchester city centre.
The firm’s contracting arm, Midgard, will build the housing block if it receives planning approval. The scheme would provide 359 homes in total across a part-10-storey, part-28-storey building in Sparkle Street, near Manchester Piccadilly Station.
JRL has submitted the application to Manchester City Council in tandem with development manager Central Urban and architect firm SimpsonHaugh. The plans also include some residential gardens and five new townhouses, which will be integrated into the 10-storey part of the building.
Before construction begins, Midgard will demolish the existing low-rise buildings at the site.
Midgard’s finances have been a large factor in JRL’s strong turnover growth over the past few years. In 2022 Midgard’s pre-tax profit jumped to £25.3m from £14.5m, while its turnover increased to £536.3m compared with £456.8m a year earlier.
Those results helped JRL retain its spot as one of the top 30 biggest contractors by turnover in the UK.
The Sparkle Street project is the latest in a number of large jobs recently announced in Manchester. Last month, John Sisk scooped a £300m job to build a new stand at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.
Just before that, Willmott Dixon took a £60m job to build a science research site in Manchester.
