Kylian Mbappe saved Paris Saint-Germain just 10 days after his disappointment in the World Cup final. His side defeated RC Strasbourg 2-1 in Ligue.
Mbappe, despite scoring a hat trick, was on the losing side in Qatar 2022’s final showpiece match. However, he didn’t appear to have any health issues in his first match for PSG after the World Cup.
With almost the last kick of play, the 24-year-old scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 96th minute.
Marquinhos had given PSG an early lead in the first half, but the defender scored an own goal shortly after the break.
Mbappe, with hopes of winning fading, used his speed to pass behind the Strasbourg defense and was eventually brought down.
Messi is yet to return to Argentina to celebrate his World Cup win in Argentina. Mbappe converted the penalty to make PSG eight points clear at top of Ligue 1.
Mbappe’s goal saved Neymar Jr. from being sent off in humiliating circumstances during the match.
Neymar was twice booked at the same time, the second being for diving in the Strasbourg box. As he did earlier in the match, the 30-year-old Brazilian international fell to the ground without any contact from the defender.
Mbappe continues to move
Mbappe’s determination was evident when he won games again for PSG in just over a week after what was arguably his biggest disappointment.
Argentina defeated France in what was undoubtedly the most important final of World Cup history, despite Mbappe’s heroics at Lusail Stadium.
Mbappe was welcomed back at Parc de Princes by fans who sang his name during Wednesday’s match. The superstar is eager to continue with the remainder of the season.
“It makes you feel good. After Wednesday’s match, he thanked the fans and told PSG TV: “I thank you all.”
“When you return from a situation such as what I experienced at the World Cup it is always heartwarming to know that you have come home. It makes you feel happy.”
Messi will not be seen celebrating until Sunday’s match against Lens in the PSG league.
