Winston Churchill’s first home hits London market

Located above what is now the Sautter cigar shop, the property is being jointly marketed by Wetherell and Clifton Property Partners.

Churchill leased the property in August 1900 at age 25 from his cousin Charles ‘Sunny’ Spencer-Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough.

Prior to this, he had been living at his mother’s house at 35A Great Cumberland Place in Marble Arch.

The apartment sits within a grand pinkish-buff terracotta mansion block designed in 1888 by architect Sir Ernest George in an Early Renaissance style.

It’s situated on the doorstep of the famous 5-star Connaught Hotel, which during Churchill’s residency was known as The Coburg.

While living at the Mount Street address, Churchill was elected to Parliament as the Conservative candidate for Oldham in October 1900, marking the beginning of his 60-year career as an MP.

He also published “Ian Hamilton’s March,” a book about his experiences during the Second Boer War, and delivered his maiden speech in the House of Commons.

The property holds romantic significance as well.

In 1904, the 29-year-old Churchill first met his future wife, 19-year-old Clementine Hozier, at a Mayfair ball while residing at the apartment.

Although they wouldn’t meet again for four years, they eventually married in September 1908.

Peter Wetherell, Founder & Executive Chairman of Wetherell, said this was a unique opportunity.

“Buyers are being offered the ultimate in Churchill memorabilia with the opportunity to purchase the first bachelor pad of iconic British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill located on Mount Street in the heart of Mayfair,” he said.

The apartment has been beautifully modernised with luxurious specifications while maintaining its period charm.

It features nine double-height windows overlooking Mount Street, with views toward the Connaught Hotel, from which Churchill reportedly enjoyed takeaway meals.

The bright reception room sits in the middle of the lateral apartment and has a corner bay window and feature fireplace. It was in this room that the young Churchill entertained political associates and friends.

The large principal bedroom suite, formerly Churchill’s bedroom, has a bay window, built-in mirrored wardrobes, and an ensuite shower room.

The second bedroom, which Churchill used as his breakfast and dining room, now provides another bedroom suite with built-in wardrobes and an ensuite.

Hugo Miller, Associate at Clifton Property Partners, said the property’s prime location was impressive.

“Mount Street and its surrounding streets and gardens make up the most exclusive urban village in London where international luxury brands sit alongside heritage craftspeople and Michelin star dining,” he said.

“The fashion boutiques of Bond Street are just a short walk away across Berkeley Square and the green expanses of Hyde Park and Green Park are also within close walking distance.”
